OAKVILLE/BURLINGTON— The IRONDames know a thing about perseverance. They channel it each time they swim, cycle or run to the end of a race – their perennial favorites being IRONMAN triathlons. And they do it so that they can give the gift of perseverance to those in need of some. Using just their relentless hunger for athletic challenges, the group of local heroes is delivering lifesaving exercise to cancer patients and survivors in the Halton area.
It’s been four and a half years since the IRONDame donned the pink boas that tied them together in a pact to race in their very first IRONMAN triathlon. During this period they have raised over $363,000 they have raised for the expansion of the Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House’s ground breaking cancer exercise program and exercise facility. It’s been a long journey that has taken each IRONDame to further than she has ever been before, but the outcome has been resounding. Since the Cancer Exercise Program’s launch in 2010 Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House has offered over 1,850 classes, with over 7,967 visits from more than the 546 participants from Halton that have benefitted from the program.
The IRONDames’ second imperative is to inspire others to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle through the upcoming Mother’s Day Lace up for LOVE 1&5k Run/Walk, now in its fifth year. The race is a chance for participants to benefit cancer patients and survivors they know and honour ones they’ve lost in an act that is unbiased toward age and activity level. For cancer patients, exercise is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline, and the IRONDames are persevering to make it possible. The proceeds of our 5th Annual Lace up for LOVE 1 & 5k Walk/Run will go to funding this innovative and vital Cancer Exercise Program on an annual basis.

The IRONDames believe in the expansion of WELLSPRING Birmingham Gilgan House’s Ground Breaking Cancer Exercise Program because research indicates that exercise has significant benefits for people coping with cancer. Along the way, they hope to inspire others to make exercise a part of their life and the lives of those around them.
Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House was established in June of 2000 to meet the needs of people coping with cancer in Oakville, Mississauga and surrounding communities. The centre has experienced strong growth since it opened its doors and now welcomes more than 13,000 visits from men, women and children annually. Wellspring continues to help people meet the everyday challenges that cancer brings, today and in the future. The Cancer Exercise Program has quickly become the most popular program at Wellspring. To date there have been over 7,967 visits to more than 1,850 sessions of the Cancer Exercise Program at Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House – all free of charge.
