Live & Play Every Day

New City Campaign

Burlington, Ont. — The City of Burlington launched the Live & Play campaign today and invites residents to celebrate and explore opportunities to play throughout the city, every day.

The launch begins a 12-week celebration of activities and events, encouraging residents to engage in play every day. The launch will also recognize June as Recreation and Parks Month and Seniors’ Month as well as celebrating the City of Burlington’s High Five® accreditation, Canada’s quality standard for children’s recreation and sport.

“Parks and recreation spaces and programs contribute to unique and vibrant neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Rick Goldring.”It guides the evolution of our city’s public spaces into lively, welcoming and inspiring environments for play that families can enjoy.”

Mayor Goldring, on behalf of the city, proclaimed June as Recreation and Parks month. Chris Glenn, director of parks and recreation, accepted the proclamation. Play expert Gina Browne, Ph.D., Reg.N., Hon.LL.D, FCAHS, founder and director of the System-Linked Research Unit on Health and Social Service Utilization at McMaster University, joined the launch, highlighting the science of play and why play is essential for a full and healthy life.

“We are encouraging our community to take a 30-day challenge to engage in play for 30 minutes every day for 30 consecutive days,” said Glenn. “If you can do this, imagine the possibility of keeping active every day of the year.”

The play campaign celebrates opportunities to play across the city during a summer of activities. The city is offering participants the chance to win one of 12 $100 recreation gift certificates. Residents are encouraged to share how they play. Play entries may be submitted on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram using the hashtag #LivePlay. There will be a weekly draw for 12 consecutive weeks.

The City of Burlington will also have play champions in the community who will award residents in the community with free swim or skate passes, drop-in fitness passes and preschool and youth program passes.
