Lest We Forget – The brave, the fallen and our freedom.

Remembrance Day is a time each year when we reflect on the loss of the brave men and women who gave their lives in our defence during war and peacetime, and also acknowledge the courage and commitment of those currently serving in our armed forces. Across the country, schools, memorial parks and community halls will play host to ceremonies of remembrance. We’ll take a moment of silence on our own, or gather with others to consider the sacrifices made on our behalf. Here are a few local suggestions for saluting our soldiers this year…

RESPECT AND PRIDE

Show your appreciation by attending one of the parades and ceremonies taking place in our community. Complete with pipers and colour guards, these events will finish with formal services at our local cenotaphs in both Aurora and Newmarket.

NIGHT WATCH

Looking to experience something wonderful and unique? Gather your friends and family for a candlelight vigil, hosted by the Newmarket Legion at sundown on November 7th.  With over 400 crosses and candles, each signifying a Newmarket vet whose life has been lost, cadet groups take turns standing vigil until the following day.  Be sure to bundle up for this amazing display of respect and solidarity.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

As part of their initiative to continue a tradition of Remembrance, the Canadian Legion holds a poster, poem and essay contest each year.  Kids from grades 1 to 12 are eligible, and the winners represent Canada’s youth at the National Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa the following year. Contest details can be found at www.legion.ca/honour-remember/contests. This is a great way for kids to learn more about our history and pride, in a thoughtful, engaging, creative activity!

THE POPPY

Our most recognized symbol of Remembrance, the poppy represents a significant fundraising campaign for Legions across the country. Funds raised provide immediate assistance to ex-servicemen and women in need including food, shelter or medical attention for themselves or their families. Any ex-serviceman or woman or dependent is eligible to apply for financial aid from the funds raised. So donate generously when you pick up your poppy this year and wear it each day until 11am on November 11th as a sign of your respect.

Spend this Remembrance Day together as a family, take pride in our country and be thankful for the courage, commitment and sacrifices of so many.
