You can’t argue with the excitement many people experience when they find a unique item at a bargain price in an antique store or garage sale. That rush may even extend to suddenly stopping the car to pick something up off the side of the road (yes, it happens). One man’s trash is invariably another man’s treasure. With the diverse range of local antique and curiosity shops coupled with the ease with which you can sell unwanted stuff online, it’s easier than ever to find that perfect piece with the perfect patina.

Exploring an antique shop filled with a range of items from different decades or a store with a plethora of kitsch, knickknacks, vinyl records or art provides a great opportunity to learn about the past. Taking younger folks on these outings can lead to conversations about lifestyles during their parent’s era, their grandparent’s time, or even earlier. However we recommend that you do not take young children who may distract you from the relaxing process of browsing, rummaging, and conversing with the local shop owners.

Craftadian Port Credit Announces Spring Market Artisan Lineup

Craftadian returns to the First United Church on Saturday after its successful debut in Port Credit last year. This year’s event takes place April 29th from 10 a.m. til 5 p.m with more than 30 jury-selected artisans showcasing their handmade crafts. Founded in 2011, Craftadian has expanded gradually across Southern Ontario, evolving into the handmade presence it is today, attracting nearly 24,000 attendees over six events annually, continuously championing the independent-Canadian craft movement.

The Craftadian jury selects up-and-coming and well-known Makers, aiming to create vibrant and lively marketplaces, while spotlighting the work of today’s best and brightest local talents from Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga to Milton, Toronto and Hamilton. Keep an eye out for Laborde, a Toronto based designer who works with a mixture of semi-precious stones, mixed metals, industrial findings, leather and stunning beads for a bohemian jewellery line. Catch incredible artwork by Three on the Treetop, and find unique concrete homewares including spheres, planters and tables by Port Credit natives Studio 1228. Discover vegan, cruelty soaps in a myriad of colours handmade by Burlington’s own Small Batch Soap Co.

With a diverse roster of local makers, attendees will have the opportunity to browse through an exceptional array of quirky stationery, gourmet food, toys, apparel, apothecary and so much more. For a complete roster of artisans, click here.

Admission costs $3, and free for children under the age of 16. A portion of the ticket proceeds go towards Crafting for a Cure, a not-for-profit registered charity that looks for opportunities to ensure children are having a positive experience when a hospital visit is necessary.

Dove + Arrow: Handmade Boutique Opens in Oakville

Dove + Arrow is the new ‘Etsy’ inspired boutique in downtown Oakville worth checking out for unique, handmade goods.

The handmade industry isn’t your grandmother’s arts & crafts that we think of anymore. Since 2005, the market for unique, handcrafted goods has exploded with the world’s largest online retailer, Etsy, reaching over 1.6 million active shops, 27.1 million active buyers, and $2.39 billion in gross sales in 2016; it’s no wonder that brick and mortar shops are popping up across Canada. New boutique, Dove + Arrow, officially launches this month, setting a great example of the growing shift toward the desire for quality, artisanal, and one-of-a-kind rather than mass produced goods. The store’s founder and anchor designer, Iva Ouzounova, wanted to create that magical sense of finding handcrafted treasures in a warm and inviting space. And with a store filled to the brim with quirky, and thoughtful designs, she truly has.

“It’s one of the most natural things I’ve ever done,” says Ouzounova, who was one of the first Canadians to set up her own Etsy shop, Dream Willow Studio, in 2006. “I saw a market that was really lacking in the Halton region, and saw an opportunity to bring a handcrafted experience to the local community.”

Avoiding big box trends, Dove + Arrow supports makers (most of them local) who construct their wares in small batches. The store is comprised of work by more than 40 artisans, some work in the shop, and all who fill it with their creations.

As a result everything feels special: hand-sown lingerie, vintage inspired jewellery cast in an assortment of metals, and cozy knits crocheted with soft yarns plus so much more. It’s a great place to buy everything from handmade skincare products and unique accessories to one-of-a-kind home accents.

For an added handmade feel, there is a small atelier to allow designers to work on-site at 131 Lakeshore Road East from Tuesdays through Sundays, and interact with customers shopping at Dove + Arrow.
