Patio Guide
The best spots for eating and drinking locally this season
by Charlotte Ottaway

Just the mere hint of a warm ray of sunshine signals us Canadians to shout, “Patio season!” Enjoying a meal, a snack, or cool drink outside on your favourite establishment’s patio is a pastime that we all relish. While there are too many to fit in one feature, here are a few to put on your must-visit list this season.

Located at the foot of Main Street in Newmarket, this restaurant and bar offers a welcoming atmosphere with a sweet view of Fairy Lake. And with new owners, a new menu infused with flavours from around the world, and a new emphasis on community, Cachet is an experience you won’t soon forget! Enjoy 5-dollar martinis between 4pm and 5pm daily, or 4-dollar Caesars every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

Hungry Brew Hops

The first patio of its kind on Main Street, Hungry Brew Hops is located right in the heart of downtown Newmarket, making it the perfect spot for people watching. With a draught selection of 37 taps, there’s no shortage of microbrews and wines to choose from. Join them for “Crafty Mondays”, featuring six-dollar select pints and flights of beer, and “Cider Sundays” for five-dollar locally crafted ciders.

Lil’ Brew Hops

Right next door you’ll find Hungry Brew Hops’ sister restaurant, known for its share plates and mixology bar, and a brand new patio that opened just last year. Originally a 6-day operation, the restaurant will be expanding its hours for the summer, opening from 11am to close, 7 days a week. Visit them for wine and one-dollar oysters on “Buck-a-Shuck Tuesdays”, or bring in your own vinyl on “Vinyl Winyl Wednesdays” and enjoy select bottles of wine at half-price.

Unika Lounge at The Goulash House

Tucked away just off of Main Street, the patio at Unika Lounge offers a quieter space to enjoy a seasonal cocktail. All of the dishes are made fresh from scratch, with new menu items coming this summer. Pair the popular Czechvar beer with Lángos – the ultimate Hungarian street meat consisting of fried potato bread topped with schnitzel or chicken. Finish your meal with a homemade dessert and specialty coffee.

Pair a gourmet burger with your choice of local craft beer – including Arch Brewing, Flying Monkey and Old Flame – on the patio at Ground Burger Bar. Get comfortable on the large Muskoka chairs overlooking the river in downtown Newmarket. This summer, Ground Burger Bar will be hosting patio parties in partnership with local breweries.
