This weekend marks one month until Christmas and the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season. We want the hundreds of dollars we spend each year to count for more, so we’re shopping local and avoiding the risk of Canada Post delays by visiting local craft shows, and Burlington MADE this Saturday is one of our favourites.

Founder Stephanie Finn of Stephanie Street Events hails from New York City via Toronto, and was a crafter herself. She says, “I’ve been a part of some incredible events, both as a vendor and an organizer and marketing professional. And when we moved here three years ago, I definitely saw a need for something upbeat and exciting that not only celebrated the incredible makers in the area but also built a place for them to connect with shoppers and each other. We do our best to make shopping local fun and memorable.”

So if you’re looking to find one-of-a-kind presents and support independent makers with your holiday shopping this year, Burlington MADE is a great place to start!

The Burlington MADE Holiday Craft Market runs from 10am-4pm on Saturday, November 24th, at the Ron Joyce Centre, 4350 South Service Road, Burlington. Entry is $5, free for children 12 and under. Parking is free and the building is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit www.burlingtonmade.com/holiday.

Jason Carter is one of Canada’s most exciting and accomplished contemporary Aboriginal visual artists, celebrated for both his paintings and his carvings. He had a solo show at Alberta House on Alberta Day at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. His work has been acquired into dozens of private collections (The Government of Alberta, The City Of Edmonton, AFA, Rogers Media, Syncrude, The Shaw Art Collection, The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to name a few) as well, he has had several exciting public shows, including the Royal Alberta Museum, Art Gallery of Alberta, The Art Gallery of Calgary and the Indian and Northern Affairs Public Art Display in Ottawa, Ontario.

Jason has been commissioned by the Art Gallery of Alberta, The Canada Council for the Arts, The Alberta Foundation of the Arts, The Edmonton Arts Council, The Works International Visual Arts Society, The Society of Manufacturing Engineers of Canada, Winter Light Festival, Syncrude Canada, The Government of Canada and most recently, The Edmonton International Airport to create a 100ft x 7ft permanent installation for the new EIA which opened Summer 2012, with an expected viewing of over 1 million people per year.  He is currently working with The Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality again, building and installing a 12-ft sculpture, and with The City of Calgary on a giant installation to be announced late 2015.

He created permanent murals for the Amiskwaskahegan (Beaver Hills Park) in Edmonton and was one of three artists part of the LRT/SOUTH Extension beautification project. He was recently celebrated as ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ at the Mayor’s Evening of the Arts in Edmonton as well as Avenue Magazines Top 40 Under 40. Jason illustrated his first Children’s book April 2011, “WHO IS BOO: The Terrific Tales of One Trickster Rabbit” inspired by his first carving of a rabbit which he called ‘Nanabozho’ (inspired by the Ojibwe trickster character). Since then, ‘WHO IS BOO 2: The Continued Adventures’ has been published as WHO IS BOO 3 is expected to be released in 2015. He recently completed an 18-paining series for the Art Gallery of Alberta part of the T-REX Program called ‘Urban Animals’ which will tour Alberta for 3 years, and published his next children’s book of the same name, ‘Urban Animals’, as well, opened the ‘World Of Boo’ in the BMO World of Creativity Children’s Gallery at the Art Gallery of Alberta through May 2015.

Jason Carter is currently represented by The Bearclaw Gallery in Edmonton, Rouge Gallery in Saskatoon and The Town Square Gallery in Oakville Ontario and in 2012, opened his own gallery, The Carter-Ryan Gallery in Canmore Alberta.  Jason is member of the Little Red River Cree Nation and he paints and/or carves at least seven days a week.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: “Being an artist who divides their time equally painting and carving, I have been gifted the opportunity to express myself through two mediums, stone and canvas, and both I approach with humor and optimism. In the world we live in, there is much to be cynical about, but I have found an outlet that I, myself, gather much joy and light, and am so fortunate to be able to pass that joy on. As a Aboriginal man from the Little Red River Cree Nation, I gather much inspiration from the stories passed on by elders within my community, stories that have evolved and changed, some documented, some not, but the essence of these characters are passed on through the years. As an artist, I am inspired by the essence of some of these characters and then, in keeping with the tradition of my indigenous roots, create new stories filled with wonder and morals, and bring them to life through my chosen medium, canvas and stone with written word.

As a contemporary Aboriginal artist in pursuit of becoming my true authentic self (in this ever evolving culture), I am aware that much of my craft comes from an innate ability that I have been born with, and believe this to be a blessing and a responsibility, both of which I take very seriously. I am continuously using my gift to create new stories inspired from traditional characters with my stone and canvas. I seek inspiration from the past as I create a bold and colorful future.”

Are you looking for something fun to do this weekend? How about trying out some of the best independent food and beverage brands our area has to offer? From the curator behind the Burlington MADE craft markets, The Burlington MADE Foodie Show takes place for the first time this Saturday at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Centre.

The exciting new event features live cooking demos, swag bags for the first fifty shoppers, and a host of local food vendors selling everything from pastries and pickles to perogies and poutine. Participating makers include family-owned Burlington staples like Christy’s Gourmet Gifts and up-and-coming brands like Sachili and Mind Your Bees Wraps. Three of the Local Dining spots in our current October issue will also be there: Firebat Coffee Roasters, OKO Bagels, and Familia Fine Foods.

“It’s so easy to miss the little shops and independent cafes on your way to the big box stores, especially for busy commuters and parents,” says Stephanie Finn, founder of Stephanie Street Events and creator of the Burlington MADE series. “I wanted to take the effort out of shopping local by bringing all these hidden gems together in a place where we can make personal connections and be more conscious about where we’re spending our money and what we’re putting into our bodies. Plus, have lots of fun tasting and sampling everything!”

The Foodie Show features over 35 local brands selected for their innovation and quality, from food and beverage to kitchen accessories. Think St. Lawrence Market, but just for one day, right here in Burlington. You can grab your morning coffee and bagel or a hot lunch, then shop around to stock your pantry, upgrade your kitchen knives and cutting boards, and check some gifts off your holiday list. And don’t forget to grab some dessert and easy make-at-home meals to go. The Foodie Show has plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, too.

When you’ve done your shopping, there will also be live cooking demos every hour from 12-4pm, including Knife Sharpening and Skills from the Sharp Knife Shop, Chocolate Making from Bean to Bar from Christy’s Gourmet Gifts, and Fresh Latin Food from Scratch from 50 Pesos, winner of the Food Network’s Food Truck Faceoff.

“We’re all going to be spending a lot this holiday season, so why not use those dollars to support local, small businesses?” says Finn, who started planning events after running an artisanal business out of her home for three years while raising her two children full time. “It feels good, it’s good for our local economy, and the food tastes great!”

The Burlington MADE Foodie Show runs from 11am-5pm on Saturday, October 20th, at 4350 South Service Road, Burlington. Entry is $5, free for children 12 and under. Parking is free and the building is wheelchair accessible. For more information, go to www.burlingtonmade.com/foodieshow.

Thanks to technology, many people can−and do−work remotely. As a result, coworking spaces are flourishing. Responding to the demand, ACE Coworking opened its doors in January in downtown Oakville and the company is already attracting a diverse group of members who work out of the shared space.

Central to ACE Coworking’s philosophy is creating a vibrant community. “We’re much more than just a place to work,” says Founder and Community Director, Nancy Fornasiero. “ACE Coworking is a place to collaborate, network and be inspired by other entrepreneurs and business owners.”

The open concept workspace features large wooden desks, a quiet zone to work in peace, a relaxed and stylish lounge area, exposed brick walls, and colourful artwork by local artists. The space also boasts a rooftop patio for informal meetings or to catch some sun during lunch.

Members have access to a 12-person boardroom and smaller meeting rooms. ACE Coworking meeting rooms can be rented to non-members from $30 per hour. The workspace also offers a variety of professional development seminars, a book club, weekly yoga and regular social events.

Katie Pringle of Marigold PR is a member and says ACE Coworking offered the right culture for her company’s growing team. “The downtown location was also a selling point,” says Pringle. “Nancy believes in innovation and collaboration. She has curated an incredible collection of companies.”

“We happened to be looking for a new space when Ace Coworking was under construction, and as designers we could see Nancy’s vision,” says member, Roger Brenninkmeyer of Riverstone Branding. “Being in a space with people who have the same mindset is important.”

Setting up camp at your local coffee shop can be a good cure for the work-at-home blues, but it’s not a long-term solution. It can be difficult to meet new people and build your professional network. “Our members span many fields, from creatives to the tech space to financial services,” says Fornasiero. “The cross-pollination of industries makes for a richer community.”

ace coworking

Unlike your local cafe, ACE Coworking’s facility is available to members 24/7. Fornasiero says she’s happy for anyone interested in coworking to drop by for a tour and take advantage of a free day pass.

ACE Coworking offers day passes for $25 a day, a flexible month-to-month “hot desk” membership, or community membership. Community members can make use of ACE Coworking’s business mailing address, receive membership rates on conference rooms, and attend ACE events. Members receive free Wi-Fi, complimentary coffee and tea, as well as printing and photocopying access for monthly members.

ACE Coworking also offers reciprocal memberships with coworking spaces in other major centres. ACE Coworking is an official partner of Haltech, Halton’s Regional Innovation Centre.

For more information, visit acecoworking.ca or drop by their space at 295 Robinson Street in Downtown Oakville.

With alternative diets becoming much more common, it’s easier to find accommodating foods and restaurants that cater to special dietary needs or habits. As new trends unfold, people are realizing eating healthy does not have to feel restrictive or boring. In fact, healthy local options are often more flavourful!

March is National Nutrition Month, the perfect opportunity to give those New Year Resolutions a second round, or even better, a chance try something new! As a Holistic Nutritionist, I naturally love going to healthy restaurants, but what I love even more is getting others to try them and see how great wholesome foods can be.
Here are my Top 5 Healthy Local Restaurants to visit (if you haven’t yet):

RawAura_Decor-web

Raw Aura   |   94 Lakeshore Road East, Mississauga    |    rawaura.com
Raw Aura is located in Port Credit on Lakeshore and has a small intimate atmosphere with rustic décor. It is 100% vegan, dairy and gluten-free, using only fresh, living foods. Utilizing raw ingredients means nothing is heated above 105F, maximizing the enzymes and nutrients in the food that are typically killed while cooking. RawAura_Falafel-webAll their meals are fresh and nutritious and bursting with flavor. When you think raw, you probably think bland and tasteless, but if you want to take your taste buds on a delicious mouth-watering adventure, this is the place to go. Each time I visit, I try something new. Some meals I’ve had are their “Burrito” using a sundried tomato wrap, “Falafel Wrap” containing sprouted chickpea falafels wrapped in collard greens, their “Pasta Bolognese” and “Yellow Coconut Curry Noodles”, both made with zucchini noodles. If you have room for more, I recommend the chocolate banana cake. Their deserts are like nothing you’ve ever had and the best part, you don’t have to feel guilty after indulging!

Lettuce Love Café    |    399 John St., Burlington    |    lettucelovecafe.com

LettuceLoveLocated in downtown Burlington, this restaurant has a cozy feel. Their menu is completely vegan and gluten-free but the options are endless. Their motto is “healthy never tasted so good” and you know why once you try the food. Avocado fries, loaded salads, power bowls, burgers, sandwiches, grilled cheese, even vegan nachos! This place has it all and you would never know they use alternative, allergen-friendly ingredients because everything tastes amazing. They also serve wine and beer, perfect for a (healthy) date night!

KellysBake-web

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe    |     401 Brant Street, Burlington    |    kellysxo.com

If you live in Burlington, you have likely seen or heard of Kelly’s Bake Shoppe. It is located a block over from Lettuce Love Café and it’s their sister eatery. It was voted the Top 3rd bakeshop to visit in the world. I like to call this place my non-guilty pleasure because it is your one-stop shop to satisfy your sweet tooth. KellysBake2-web100% vegan, gluten-free, peanut-free and refined sugar-free, they use nothing but quality ingredients, without compromising taste! Their specialty is cupcakes but my personal favorites are their muffins and cookies. They also make donuts, banana bread, brownies and cake pops. They do cakes and large cupcake orders for special events. There is a daily menu so be sure to check out what they offer each day of the week. I highly recommend a visit for a coffee and a treat; you will probably end up bringing home a box of assorted goods!

green press oakville

Green Press    |    270 Lakeshore Rd E, Oakville, ON   |   greenpress.ca

Green Press is situated in the heart of Downtown Oakville, and offers a fantastic variety of cold pressed juices. The interior is fresh and clean against a backdrop of rustic barn board, complete with a couple of tables where you can sit and watch the world go by outside. These juices are organic, raw and unpasteurized – and if you can’t make it downtown, fear not, they deliver!

b.good    |    487 Cornwall Rd, Oakville    |   bgood.ca

bgood smoothieb.good has multiple locations around the GTA and plans to open several more in Halton. They offer healthy, fresh and hand-cooked meals, including kale and grain bowls, seasonal salads, hand-cut real fries, all-natural burgers, seasonal smoothies and more. b.good is an easy and fast way to eat nutritious and delicious local food fare. Olives en Folie is one of the newest additions to Downtown Oakville’s bustling food scene, and visiting is an experience in itself. The shop carries an incredible selection of fine Extra Virgin Olive Oil from around the world, and imported aged Modena Balsamic Vinegars. You have the option to try before you buy, which is a wonderful way to explore the subtle differences between the oils and vinegars. For example, one of the oils has a naturally peppery taste and is packed with anti-oxidants (great if you have a cold!), while some of their infused offerings include black truffle, blood orange and even bacon.

All the different flavours create a world of possibilities when it comes to recipes at home. Expect to spend some time sampling and experimenting, the room itself is quite impressive. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and above all, happy to tell you about the various types of olive oils and balsamic vinegars that they carry. The products are bottled on site with different sizes to choose from.

Not to be forgotten are the in-house skin care products, Beauté en Folie. These products are made exclusively for Olives en Folie using extra virgin olive oil and other natural, simple to pronounce ingredients. They make a great gift, as do their pre-packaged hostess gifts that include a mixture of olive oil and balsamic bottles. Olives en Folie also have a wide selection of gourmet food items such as mustards, jams, finishing sea salts and honey to choose from – all of which are sure to elevate your culinary prowess!
